Jeff Hiatt, longtime Superintendent of Allen Public Schools, attended his final school board meeting Monday and said farewell to the board.
It was just a chance encounter at a Shawnee restaurant and now Jearl Knighten is the proud owner of an honor quilt.

Plans are just now getting underway for Allen’s Independence Celebration. It is set for Saturday July 12th at the Allen Park. We will set times for the parade and then the park activities by next week’s paper. So far we will be eating grilled hot dogs, have a free swim, a new water slide with a bounce house. We will play games so start looking for the fastest turtle, plus other games. If you want to participate or be a vendor we will have those details next week as well. A DJ will be having some karaoke and play some music for the evening. So mark your calendar and get your lawn chairs ready for a great night at the park.
Living in Allen, you get to watch a lot of humanity, just like in other small towns that populate our fruited plain. Another nice thing about writing a weekly article in a small town paper such as ours is you get to observe and even be a part of the details that make America interesting. Big stuff in our small towns as time passes by is watching kids grow up, mature (most of them) and sometimes we get to share in the pride they bring to their families and our town as they go out and see what other happenings take place.
